A “QUICK!” Review of “Badland Hunters (2024)“

Ma Dong-Seok is one of the coolest dudes in Korean cinema. I do think the film is a little disappointing as the post-apocalyptic setting isn’t used in an exciting way. The plot is also nothing special. It is incredibly dumb and predictable while also having minimal explanation about anything. The characters are also very bland. There is barely any exploration of any of the characters including the main character. Due to this, they all come off as one-dimensional and this makes it very difficult to care about anyone. However, it has some incredibly well-choreographed and fun action sequences. Who doesn’t want to see Ma Dong-seok kick ass!

A “QUICK!” Review of “Madame Web (2024)“

I would absolutely love to be in these Sony meetings because I am absolutely baffled how things like Madame Web are getting greenlit. Madame Web is one of the worst superhero movies ever made! It has terrible writing, characters, action setpieces and even acting. Dakota Johnson is so dull and boring as the main lead but this is probably down to the terrible script. To be fair, the movie does have an interesting concept with this Final Destination x Terminator thing. However, it is so poorly executed that it makes Morbius look like The Dark Knight. Anyway, give me the "He Was in the Amazon With My Mom When She Was Researching Spiders Right Before She Died” cut!

A “QUICK!” Review of “The Iron Claw (2023)“

The Iron Claw grips you with its enthralling yet devastating story. It is based on the true story of the Von Erich wrestling family and shows the powerful, strong and loving family bond that also hurt them all. Zac Efron gives one of his best performances in his entire career. He delivers a lot of subtlety and nuance to his performance that still conveys the pain his character is having physically and mentally. The supporting cast is phenomenal as well and the chemistry between them all feels genuine. This is a downward spiral emotional rollercoaster of a film. I highly recommend this, whether you like wrestling or not.

A “QUICK!” Review of “The Beekeeper (2024)“

I came for a fun action movie starring Jason Statham and got exactly that. It is an inferior John Wick movie with an elderly dying of a scam instead of a dog. The big problem this movie has is its terrible writing and dialogue. It is filled with countless Bee puns and one-liners that don’t land. The characters are forgettable and one-dimensional. The villain is very cartoony compared to every other character. There is a person sent to kill our main character halfway through the film that feels like they are from a completely different movie. However, you are here for the action scenes and they are very fun to watch with their great choreography. In the end, that is what most people are watching this for and it delivers.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)“

What a mess of a movie. The visual effects are atrociously bad, the writing and dialogue are terrible a lot of the time, the comedy feels like the force humour you saw in a lot of Marvel movies, the pacing is slow, plot is disjointed and messy with weak character development from Aquaman himself. The biggest disappointment is the villain, Black Manta. He is Aquaman’s most iconic villain but he is so underwhelming in this movie because the plot has some ancient evil king poisoning his mind throughout. He ended up still feeling like a side villain. There are some cool action set pieces, especially the trident fight at the end which had great choreography. Aquaman and Orm having this buddy copy dynamic was fun to watch. It is a shame that this is how the DCEU ended.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Wonka (2023)“

This prequel lacks a lot of the dark undertones of previous live-action Willy Wonka movies. Timothée portrays Wonka with this upbeat, charming and charismatic nature that lacks any dark edge to him compared to Gene Wilder. It doesn’t help that the story doesn’t explore more of who Wonka is, so it kind of wastes the prequel idea. However, it is a fun, light-hearted musical that delivers on a whimsical adventure that everyone can enjoy. Vibrant costumes, well-made set design, enjoyable musical numbers and great performances with superb direction from the director, who is known for the Paddington movies, execute a film that is a very enjoyable time.
