A Review of “Oppenheimer (2023)”

Christopher Nolan is one of my favourite directors operating today. He makes some of the most entertaining movies in modern cinema. Even at his worst, such as with his last film Tenet, it is still way more entertaining than a majority of movies released. After the Warner Bros same-day streaming debacle they pulled; Nolan left for Universal and this is his first film with them. Does Nolan continue to deliver or has he dropped a big bomb? Cillian Murphy has been a long-time collaborator with Nolan but this is the first time he is the main lead. He is PHENOMENAL as the titular character. He gives such nuance to his performance through body language and facial expressions alone to convey the emotion of his character. It is such a breath of fresh air from the normal yelling Oscar performances you see. He is genuinely perfect at Oppenheimer and if he doesn’t get a nomination for his performance then I will be fuming! One surprising aspect of watching this film was how st...

A Review of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)”

Mission Impossible is one of those franchises that started rough but got better as more entries were made. The previous entry, Mission Impossible Fallout, might be one of the best action movies ever made. Of course, I was massively hyped for the next entry but I had a slight worry when I heard it was going to split into parts. Does the Mission Impossible franchise continue to cruise upwards or this time a mission failure? Let’s start with the reason that many watch this franchise, the action and stunts. Tom Cruise continues to be one of the few proper action stars as he does dangerous stunts for our entertainment. This entry is no exception as he rides a motorbike off a cliff, speed gliding and does a fight sequence on a train reminiscent of the first film. Tom doing it for real, makes the sequence feel more real and it certainly shows in the way these scenes are shot. In terms of action set pieces, the airport scene is incredibly tense with how many groups trying t...

A “QUICK!” Review of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)”

Rewatching the trilogy again, this entry manages to not fall into one big problem the MCU has. The lack of colours. MCU movies are notably dull or grey but not GOTG2. The vibrancy of the colours makes this one of the most visually pleasing movies to watch. This movie also has some nice neat moments such as the Yondu and Rocket “You’re like me!” conversation and the moment where Mantis felt Drax’s sadness. It does have a weaker plot though with 3 different ongoing plots that seem to be happening at the same time. These plots are barely connected and only get stitched together right at the end. Nevertheless, the cast is still phenomenal and the action set pieces are still enjoyable to watch. The soundtrack is great with one of the best opening use of Mr Blue Sky in cinema history. A great sequel!

A Review of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)”

This is the first Transformer-titled movie to not be directed by Michael Bay. Bumblebee (2018) was a breath of fresh air from the ridiculously stupid Michael Bay movies. It gave me hope that the Transformers franchise will be able to finally accelerate in a good direction. However, is this actually the case? Or does it just fumble like the old entries? Firstly, the design of the transformers is great. I love that they are a lot more colourful with distinct looks which makes it easier to recognise who is who. There are new Beast Transformers called the Maximals and they look terrific. The action scenes are also way more visible and easier to comprehend what is going on compared to the Bay movies. The action is incredibly entertaining with great choreography. The story also gives a proper character arc for Optimus Prime which is interesting. We don’t see this side to his character so I quite liked it. In terms of the human characters. I think Noah played by Anthony ...

A “QUICK!” Review of “Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)”

Rewatching this and I still love it! One of the biggest game changers in the MCU! Turning complete unknowns into a household name is an achievement! It’s got a simple yet engaging story; a lovable cast of characters with great performances from the cast; a Very funny screenplay and dialogue; Great CGI and visuals; Entertaining action set pieces; and a terrific incorporation of 70s music! This is a definite must-watch for everyone!

A “QUICK!” Review of “Air (2023)”

Air tells the true story of the origin of the shoe, Air Jordans. This sounds boring on paper but the witty and fun script by Alex Convery (in his writing debut!) keeps the movie from ever being dull. The cast also gives a funny and lively performance while also having great chemistry. Special mention to Viola Davis as Michael’s Mother who gives a very strong performance. The movie does feel like a glorified ad for Nike though and none of the characters have real character arcs or development. It also makes a weird choice of not showing Michael’s face which is more distracting than anything else. Overall, it’s a very entertaining biographical sports drama film. It made a movie about budgets and spending somehow the most interesting film ever. Missed opportunity to call this film a 4 letter word though. If you watch the movie, you know what I mean.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Kandahar (2023)”

This is a 2023 action movie about a US operative having to fight his way out of Afghanistan with his interpreter while being hunted. Wait isn’t that the same plot as Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant? It’s a little weird that this movie came out just a month after The Covenant with almost the same plot. The 3rd act and the ending is also VERY similar. The difference comes in execution and unfortunately, Kandahar isn’t as good. The first hour is incredibly slow as it setups the whole plot but it takes ages. The relationship between the main lead and the interpreter isn’t that strong. The message isn’t delivered in a very meaningful way. There is also not a lot of action set pieces even though there is a stellar night sequence in this one. It’s just another passable movie starring Gerald Butler.
