A “QUICK!” Review of “Beau Is Afraid (2023)”

I love weird, unique and even crazy types of movies, which Beau is Afraid most certainly is. The movie is technically well-made with its visuals and cinematography. Joaquin Phoenix also gives an amusing performance of someone with insane anxiety, Unfortunately, the story is overstuffed and nonsensical. The first hour starts with a lot of intrigue but it becomes almost painfully dull after that. Weird things happen with no rhyme and reason, the multitude of stories and character threads don’t connect, and the self-indulgent nature of this whole film.  A big issue is the excessive and exhausting 3-hour runtime with its slow pacing. Doesn’t help that there are so many scenes of just nothing happening, such as characters walking or sleeping. I give praise for doing a big swing on something original but this time it was a huge miss.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant (2023)”

Guy Ritchie is known for his fast-paced, kinetic style, fun dialogue, over-the-top characters and violence. The Covenant is none of that. It is the least Guy Ritchie movie he has ever made and it is terrific. It is a suspenseful war thriller with intense action scenes. The subject of Afghanistan military interpreters is taken very seriously and with impressive restraint compared to his usual bombastic style. The cinematography is great, the score is terrific in elevating the tension, and everyone gives a great performance with special mention to Dar Salim as the interpreter. It is just a very entertaining movie.

A “QUICK!” Review of “BlackBerry (2023)”

What starts as a dark comedy, becomes a grim drama by the end and that is great. This is an excellent telling of the rise and fall of Blackberry. The writing is fun and the story is engaging because of how crazy it is. The technical jargon is made to be easily understood. The performance by everyone is great even if it is very dramatized and over the top. The filming style with its weird snap zooms can be a bit odd but it does make it feel unique. A must-watch, for Canada’s sake.

A Review of “Extraction 2 (2023)”

I loved Chris Hemsworth in Extraction (2020). Getting to see him outside of Marvel in a fun action movie, was enjoyable. However, it was a very flawed movie that felt lacking compared to something like ‘John Wick’. Still, I saw potential in a sequel so I was not surprised when Extraction 2 was announced. Does this improve on its predecessor or continue to have the same problems? Let’s start with why people are watching this: the action. The action scenes are still a blast to watch! The violent and brutal fist fights with the swift gunplay are all incredibly well choreographed. The sequel also tops the first movie’s one-shot action sequence by being 21 minutes. It isn’t just longer though, it is well-connected and more awesome as well. The prison sequence is phenomenal with how tense it is and how our main character punches his way out. Chris Hemsworth continues to be charismatic and charming as our main character: Tyler Rake. Chris does a lot of his own stunts and it c

A “QUICK!” Review of “Renfield (2023)”

Casting Nick Cage as Dracula is the best thing this movie does. Nicholas Hoult is also lovable as Renfield. The Nicks truly kill it! The action scenes are surprisingly enjoyable with how well choreographed and how they really utilise that R rating. Unfortunately, Awkwafina’s character and her boring plot to take down a mob take a lot of screen time. The movie wastes its unique premise and makes it a cliché movie.  Nevertheless, the short runtime of 93 minutes makes it a good watch to kill time.

A Review of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was not JUST the best-animated movie of 2018 or the best movie of 2018, it was the best Spider-Man film period! I was thrilled at it getting a sequel but was slightly worried it won’t live up to the first one. Is Across the Spider-Verse a worthy sequel or one universe that should’ve been closed? Firstly, let’s get the obvious out of the way. The animation is SPECTACULAR! The animation and art style changing depending on what universe the characters are in or even what universe the characters are from was a great creative choice. The way the characters move, the vibrancy and the colours of the world are so gorgeous and beautifully crafted. The action scenes are thrilling and exciting while also being well-choreographed. The soundtrack is still phenomenal here as well, with a special mention of Spider-Gwen’s theme. Originally posted by katistry In terms of story, Spider-Gwen has a bigger focus this time. We get more exploration of her ba

A “QUICK!” Review of “Tetris (2023)”

Who would’ve thought that a movie about the history of Tetris could be so entertaining? They managed to make a tense thriller about getting the rights to Tetris! It is well-acted, well-written and well-made. It is incredibly engaging and the weird thing is that a lot of the things here are true, albeit dramatized to make it more tense. This is noticeable in the 3rd act which is definitely not true but it does make for a more enjoyable watch. I do wish there was more exploration of Alexey (the actual creator of Tetris) and his friendship with Henk. I also found the Henk family stuff and translator thing as unnecessary drama. Overall, I was glued to this movie like a person is glued to playing Tetris!
