A “QUICK!” Review of “Flow (2024)”

Flow is a uniquely captivating animated movie by Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis. The movie is entirely dialogue-free as our main cast is entirely animals who have to unite after a flood devastates their home. Even without dialogue, the story is straightforward to follow and the character (animal?) arcs are conveyed incredibly well. There is a wonderful theme of unity and connection. I also love all the mysteries within this world that are up to the viewers’ interpretation. The animation is a perfect blend of realism and a painting art style. There is diligent care for the animals as they move and behave like they would in real life. The fact that this was all made in Blender is astounding! The music score is also wonderful. This is an easy recommendation for everyone. It is mesmerizing and easily one of the best movies in 2024.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Nosferatu (2024)”

Director Robert Eggers continues to delight with his visually stunning remake of Nosferatu. Mesmerizing cinematography, amazing practical sets, well-detailed costumes and terrific performances from everyone. Special mention to Bill Skarsgård who is unrecognisable as Nosferatu with his phenomenal performance. Likewise, Lily-Rose Depp delivers a masterful and unhinge performance as the main lead, Ellen. A couple of gripes prevent this from being a perfect film. The pacing slows down significantly in the second half and loses the unique disorienting energy of the first act. I also wish the plot explored more of Ellen’s backstory and why Nosferatu is the way he is. I also have to admit that the choice of giving Nosferatu a moustache can come off as kind of funny. Still, this is a very creepy and unsettling film that is visually spectacular. A worthy watch!

A “QUICK!” Review of “Heretic (2024)”

The premise of two young Mormon missionaries trying to convert a man to their religion. However, he flips the table and tries to shake their faith instead, which is intriguing stuff. The first act is great, with all the tension and Hugh Grant’s phenomenally unsettling performance. He is a stand-out here and it is great to see him in a role that is completely different from his norm. The second act with the philosophical debate is genuinely very thought-provoking. Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t stick the landing and the final act is kind of underwhelming. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this a lot, and I always love it when people do something different with the horror genre.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Carry-On (2024)”

If you think about the logic that occurs in this movie, then it starts to come apart. Too many stupid things occur, dumb decisions made and countless plot conveniences. It is a movie that you need to shut your brain for. If you do, then the film is quite enjoyable. Taron Egerton gives a great performance as the main lead and you can feel the stress his character is experiencing. Jason Bateman is the standout as he steps out of his normal comedic roles and plays a calm in-control villainous role. The back and forth-between these two characters is the biggest highlight. The movie has a strong first 2 acts but derails a bit in the final act. Nonetheless, it is a relatively good time.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Hotel Mumbai (2018)”

It is a movie based on the true events of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. One thing I appreciate is that this movie does not shy away from how horrific the attack was. The violence is brutal and honestly difficult to watch. The film is incredibly suspenseful, tense and gripping to watch. There is terrific acting from Dev Patel who plays a staff and Anupam Kher who plays real-life head chef Hemant Oberoi. Where the movie falters is when it focuses on the couple. Their characters make so many infuriating choices and was genuinely frustrating to watch. I wish the whole film had just focused on the Hotel staff trying to protect the guests. Despite that, this is an incredibly well-made movie and a harrowing depiction of the tragic event that is worth watching
